Common questions

Do I have to use accounting software?

VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and file VAT returns through compatible software. Sole traders and landlords brought into Making Tax Digital for Income Tax must do the same for their business and property income. Others can keep paper records, although software usually makes bookkeeping quicker and more accurate.

How long must I keep my records?

Sole traders and landlords should keep records for at least five years after the 31 January submission deadline for the relevant tax year. Limited companies generally need to keep records for six years from the end of the financial year they relate to.
