Many VAT-registered businesses, from sole traders to large companies, underpay or overpay VAT without realising it, until HMRC visits. Common problems include incorrect rounding, invoices that do not meet HMRC’s requirements, VAT reclaimed on costs where it is blocked or restricted, and figures placed in the wrong boxes of the return.

Common questions
Do I need software for VAT returns?
Yes. All VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and submit VAT returns using software compatible with Making Tax Digital, unless HMRC has agreed an exemption.
I have found a mistake on a past return. What should I do?
Some errors can be corrected on your next return, while larger ones must be reported to HMRC separately. Anewthing can check which applies and help you make the correction.
