Anewthing can help with VAT registration, returns and deregistration, together with advice on the decisions around them. Sometimes it can be worthwhile for a sole trader, partnership, company or charity to register voluntarily before it is required, for example, to recover VAT on costs when most customers are VAT registered themselves.

Common questions
Can I register for VAT before I reach the threshold?
Yes. Voluntary registration can suit businesses whose customers are mainly VAT registered or that have significant VAT-bearing costs. It also brings Making Tax Digital obligations, so it is worth discussing first.
What happens if I register late?
HMRC can backdate your registration to when you should have registered, and you may owe VAT on sales from that date even if you did not charge it. Penalties can also apply.
